The Fertile Crescent

We created a large-scale map of ancient Mesopotamia using LEGO bricks and base plates.  Here are some ways this activity can help students:
  1. Hands-on Learning: By physically constructing the map using LEGO bricks, students engage in hands-on learning. This approach allows them to actively participate in the learning process, enhancing their understanding and retention of the material.
  2. Visual Representation: Creating a large-scale map helps students visualize the region of ancient Mesopotamia and its key cities and features. This visual representation can make abstract concepts more tangible, promoting better comprehension and spatial awareness.
  3. Collaboration and Teamwork: Group activities encourage collaboration and teamwork among students. By working together to design and build the map, students learn to communicate effectively, share ideas, negotiate, and solve problems collectively. These skills are essential in real-world situations and promote social development.
  4. Creativity and Critical Thinking: Building a LEGO map requires students to think creatively and critically. They must analyze historical information, determine the scale and placement of cities and features, and make design decisions. This process fosters problem-solving skills and encourages students to think outside the box.
  5. Reinforcement of Content: The act of building the map reinforces the students' understanding of ancient Mesopotamia. They must research and identify the important cities and geographical features, which helps them solidify their knowledge of the subject matter.
  6. Engaging and Fun: Using LEGO bricks and base plates adds an element of fun to the learning experience. Students are more likely to be engaged and motivated when the activity incorporates their interests and provides an enjoyable and interactive way to learn.
  7. Long-lasting Learning: Creating a large-scale map is a tangible product that students can revisit and use as a reference. Overall, this whole class activity promoted active learning, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and engagement. It offered a multisensory approach that caters to different learning styles and helps students develop various skills applicable beyond the classroom.
