Fall 2016:
 Democracy is a Verb

And so it begins...

Fall, 2016, we began our work in project/inquiry based learning. On January 26, 2017, we held our first public exhibition of learning.
Democracy is a Verb is a  figurative way to describe how democracy works. It's a statement meant to highlight the active, participatory nature of democratic systems. Here's a breakdown:
  • A verb, in linguistic terms, is an action word. It signifies doing something.
  • A democracy, in political terms, is a system of government where the power is vested in the people, who exercise that power through voting.
So when someone says "democracy is a verb," they're trying to emphasize that democracy is not a passive system—it's not something that just exists without effort. Instead, it's an active process that requires ongoing participation, engagement, and action from its citizens. This could be in the form of voting, protesting, writing to representatives, engaging in community service, running for office, and more.
The phrase suggests that for a democracy to function well, its citizens can't just sit back and let others make the decisions. They must actively participate and continually work to uphold democratic values and processes. It's a call to action for citizens to participate in their government and engage with civic life.
