Our Intercession: The Great Marble Maze Challenge

The Great Marble Maze Challenge is an excellent pedagogical tool that encompasses many learning outcomes and skills. Here are some ways in which the kids benefited from this activity:
  1. Collaboration and Teamwork: The students worked in groups, which promotes cooperation and collaboration. They learn to express their ideas and also listen to the opinions of others.
  2. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Designing a marble maze with specific criteria requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will need to plan out their designs and find creative ways to meet the requirements of the maze, like deciding the best path for the marble to follow.
  3. Creativity: With the freedom to create their own maze designs, students are able to flex their creative muscles. They can think about themes and aesthetics, which taps into their imaginative side.
  4. Spatial Reasoning: Constructing a physical object like a maze helps students develop spatial reasoning. They need to understand how the marble will move in three dimensions, which can improve their understanding of physics and geometry.
  5. Communication: When they present their maze to the second graders, your students will need to articulate their design choices and themes, honing their communication skills.
  6. Receiving Feedback: Getting feedback from the second graders can be a learning experience in itself. It can teach students to accept criticism positively, understand different perspectives, and make improvements based on feedback.
  7. STEM Education: This activity aligns with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education goals. It gives them hands-on experience with basic principles of engineering and physics.
  8. Emotional Intelligence: Through the group work, students can learn to manage their emotions and understand others', developing emotional intelligence.
  9. Understanding Audience: By designing for second graders, the students learn to consider the needs and preferences of a specific audience, which is a key skill in many areas of life, from writing to product design.
